Hey all,
New to the message board. I've brewed one batch already (Brewers Best Scotch Ale) and have had great success. Now I'm hooked.
My tendency to experiment might get me in trouble this sunday as I take my first crack at inventing my own recipe.
I originally planned on brewing a Vores 0l (open source beer out of Denmark), but after finding out it was an AG recipe and was scaled to 85 liters (~22 Gal) that got chucked. So I went to my local fermenter supply house and purchased the following:
[Extract]
7lbs DME (light)
[Malt]
2lbs Lager Malt
1lb Crystal Malt
1lb Munich Malt
[Hops]
1oz Tetnang
1oz Hallertau
[Yeast]
2 dry packets Ale yeast
[Extra]
2.5oz Guarana Beans

I plan on steeping the malt for 30 then adding the DME and and boiling for 60.
Tetnang and 1/2 Hallertau hops added after the hot break and the final 1/2 Hallertau added for the final 10.
Brewmasters out there...any thoughts on what to expect? Will my Super Sunday become a Super Disaster or one month from now can I expect something Super Tasty?
Thanks for any responses.
And oh yeah, love the boards.

*EDIT* Added the Guarana beans to the ingredient mix.

Welcome aboard, nice to see another Omaha'n here. That recipe sounds like it will be very tastey, as well as a pretty big abv! Good luck and have fun.

instead of steeping i would mash those grains...let them sit @ 150 or so for 60 min. then somehow sparge them. im guessing with 70 percent efficiency of just the grains, plus the d.m.e. youll get an o.g. of around 1.080 which is pretty high, and according to your hop rate, 1.5 ounces of 5 aau for 60 min. at 25 percent utilization youll get an ibu of 27. (you might want to bump up the bittering hops)

Whoops, I forgot one ingredient.
[Extra]
2.5oz Guarana Beans

From what I've read elsewhere they should add some bitterness, as well as some caffine. Like I said. I like to experiment...

Those Brewers Best Kits are really good. Try the German Albier its yummy!

What's a guarana bean, and why do you want it in you beer? And what's with all the bug eaters on here all of a sudden? ;)

[Dude]
Yeah, the Upstream's great. They just opened a new one out west by me.
I've got to get the recipe for their Ebenezer's Brew now that I think about it. Once a year at Christmas time is not enough!

[El Pistolero]
The guarana bean is a seed from a South American plant that posesses many of the same qualities as the coffee bean. Except a completely different flavor. Anyway, it's an experiment, like I said...

Well, the wort has been brewed and is now fermenting.
cgravier - you were pretty close on the OG estimate. The reading I took was ~ 1.073 so this is likely going to end up a sipping beer. It smells delicious though. I can't wait.

Wow, there are quite a few people from Omaha. I know there are two homebrew suppliers on 84th and Lst literally within half a block of each other. Does anyone know of any other places that sell supplies, ingredients, etc. Like liquor stores, or anything else. I like the two homebrew shops I know about, but it'd be nice to not have to drive all the way across town. I have to sprint, once I get off work if I don't do it on saturday.

The 2 you are talking about are the only 2 in town. Cornhusker Beverage is the cheapest out of the 2, but the experience of the owner at Fermenter's Supply can't be beat.

I've been scoping out some online places and it looks like you can get even better deals online. Plus free shipping. Can't beat it being delivered to your front door instead of driving across town. Fortunately, I work off of 76 & F, so I'm just a few blocks away from both places.

Thats still better than me, I am a hour from Linc or O town. Good thing for me that I work 4 10hr days and have every friday off. Still mail order cant be beat and I get my expert advise from you guys. Still I think I might hit Cornhuskers today anyway.

Guarana Beans=SUPER caffine, at least what I can remember from my weight lifting days.

Was at Cornhusker Beverage yesterday. It seems that they just raised their prices a bit. Not bad still. A case of 24 12oz recycled bottles were going for 6.99, now they are up to ten bucks. Still better than $15 for new ones. I thought that some of the ingredients went up a bit from the last time I was there, but not sure.

I have no complaints. Except that I go into all of my batches thinking it's only going to cost me so and so, but after looking around and gathering up all the little extra things that I "need" each batch ends up being at least double what I had planned on. Of course that will all level off soon, now that I think I have most of the equipment for having two batches going at once.

Four weeks ago I bought my kit, I've now spent three times that. I'ts all o.k. though, fiance has been helping brew and getting into it. So she isn't giving me flack anymore. So far I'm loving it.

cornhusker is an ok shop, but i still prefer frank at fermenters supply. they have a better selection of ingredients, and besides cornhusker only sells grain in either really small quantities (1 lb) or big quantities (55 lb).
