I am a beer newbie. I have one batch of beer fermenting in bottles, and another batch of beer in a glass carboy for conditioning. I have a few questions before I bottle that 2nd batch:

1) Can I use glass bottles that had twist-off caps? I bought a case of Blue Moon that my father-in-law and I had converted from "useless" full bottles into "valuable" empty bottles. Purely in the name of brewing, of course. Can I use those?

2) I have a bunch of 22oz bottles that used to contain Stone brewery beer. Are those ok to use?

3) I had a rag-tag collection of colored (non-brown) glass too... green bottles from Stella Artois, and some clear bottles from Innis & Gunn. Are those ok to use, or should I stick strictly to brown? Of course, I would keep them stored in a dark place, and expose them to light only moments before I expose them to my belly.

Thank you for helping out a newb.

And damn you all for having such a horrible, awesome, evil, informative forum dedicated to homebrew nerdery.:rockin:

I've never had any luck capping twist off bottles with my "wing" capper. I think you could do it with a bench capper, but with the wing capper the thinner glass breaks too easily and I couldn't get them to seal.

I also haven't had luck with stella bottles, because they seem to have a slightly different sized opening, but some of the British beer bottles work. My favorite commercial bottles for homebrew are Sam Adams bottles. They always work perfectly!

Stone's 22 ounce bottles work fine, if you don't mind the labeled glass.
