Hello,
I'm looking to take a step up from passive fermentation control to smaller active one (like 5G Carboy size is ok). I was wondering with the right controller can I use a smaller freezer for both lagering as well as more traditional ale fermentation temperature control, or would I need an ale cooler and a lager cooler? Any suggestions on an appropriate model that could serve dual purpose?

Two temp. zones in a single cooler? Is that what you are asking? I guess if you had two cooling units and the fermentation chamber was divided... OR if you had a lager that fermented at the same temp as your ale you could do both.

Not sure what you are asking.

I use a 20 cu. ft. chest freezer. On one side is my kegerator that holds 7 kegs, the other side holds 2 ale pails and I can ferment anywhere from 48-75. Haven't tried anything higher but I'm sure I could push 90. I don't think you could do this with a small freezer, but if you're asking if you can use 1 temp controller for both purposes, just not at the same time..the answer is yes.
