Takes the fun out of brewing, doesn't it? A system like that is kind of like fishing with dynamite.

I prefer the good, old fashioned ways.

You raise a good point and one would think that is does take something away from the old fashion process of making beer. I on the other hand am a very mechanical - technical person and am very intrigued at the process at which the Beer Magic produces beer. Despite what people think the Beer Magic is a very hands on process and needs monitoring at all stages of the brew but much, much less attention then with traditional AG equipment.

Just my .02

Finally got the glycol wort chiller so we are taking the "Brew Magic" out on it's maiden voyage this Sunday. Brewing a simple 3 step Imperial IPA.:ban:

With that new controller they put on it you are able to upgrade to solenoid valves to automatically turn everything on and keep temps. It will also automatically turn on pumps and keep track of times. That thing will be able to repeat a brew session exactly the same every time with little effort.

When I built my system I didn't even think about that but when I saw that on the BM I wish I did think of it. I still have to turn valves and flip switches where that controller would do it all for you.

I don't know about the newer version of the BrewMagicPRO but the one I got last year was just OK until I converted it to a HERMS. Now my efficiency is way up for an identical grain bill. The model that jlinner just received does have a new controller and I believe SABCO is using a different heating element so maybe it is superior to the model I bought in '06. Nevertheless, I prefer the HERMS setup over the RIMS......at least for my model IV.
Hey, you guys may say that BrewMagic owners suck but for all of you guys who built your own RIMS, HERMS, or AG systems; you ROCK and I for one admire your ingenuity. Nice system jlinner, congrats.

Thanks man, I could not agree with you more.

So are you just making beer for yourself or is this some kind of an investment so you can sell some beer?

For right now its just for making beer to drink with plans in the future for sales.:D

Nice, I wanted one, just couldn't find the cash. Had to build my ole home made HERMS. All manual, lots of fun, lots of work. Yours should be easier to control.

Enjoy!:mug:

I don't know about AZ but in Tejas, the state makes it very very difficult to start a small BOP or other commercial venture without some serious cash. I feel my BrewMagic is robust and durable enough that I could brew every day but the state will most likely prevent me from ever being able to sell my beer so for now I brew it and have people over to help me knock it out so I can brew about every other weekend.

jlinner, if you take it to the next level what kind of hoops do you have to jump through in AZ. Can you distribute or do you have to go through a distributor. Could you make custom brews for say a restaurant or a bar? That's been my idea. Hook up with a locally owned bar or restaurant and take maybe 3-4 of recipes that people really like and have them sample them and tell them we could brand it with their name and I'd just keep them supplied. It's a dream but maybe someday.

Good luck with your endeavours.

Runhard,

I was kind of downplaying my interest in production & distribution. Since the ordering of the Brew Magic my business partner and I have found ourselves with different business interests. Since the beginning of '07 we have applied for our Series 3 liquor license and obtained a commercial building to house said brewery equipment. We are now in talks with GW Kent and Bavarian Brewery Technologies to get outfitted with a 15 bbl system once the license is final approval.

To answer your question about the liquor license we are applying for:

Under the Series 3, we many:

May sell beer produced or manufactured on the premises for consumption on or off the premises, and may make sales and deliveries of beer to persons licensed to sell beer. May make sales and deliveries of beer to persons licensed to sell beer in another state if lawful under the laws of that state.

How do the taxes get handled? How do they track your production/sales?

Clear records are kept and frequent onsite audits are performed by the state. As far as taxes are concerned, they tax on the production and not the sale as far as I know but I could be off a little off on something there. I know there is a ton more to the taxation of alcohol in the state of AZ but we are early in the process and still have things to go over. I will need to clarify this with my business partner that is responsible for obtaining the licenses and get back to everyone

Do you intend to contract brew for other people or just for your own recipies and try to service customers directly. Enjoy the calm before the educational parts to come with state and federal tax bonds&liscenses, building code enforcement, health code enforcement, contractors, distributors, and suppliers.
Hope you have good luck with your brewing venture.

Best of luck to you and your business partner. I personally know one brewer who has been in business for 10 years and he is still passionate about the craft. His statement was, "I was the delivery guy, keg washer, grain crusher, pallet mover, tap line cleaner, ........and I love going to work each and every day." Can't argue with that because how often do we hear so many make statements about hating their job. All the best,
Runhard
