Just wanted to say hi, noobie here :mug:

I was introduced to the wonderful world of brewing by a fellow HBT member and good friend.

Currently have my first brew in bottles for about one week and I have my 2nd fermenting.

I decided to open one up today just to get a taste of what an unfinished beer tastes like.

1st Brew: IPA
6.6lbs LME, 2lbs DME
3/4 Chinook bittering hops 60min boil
1oz Cascade Hops - last 20min
1oz Simcoe Hops - last 20min
1oz Cascade Hops - last 10min
1oz Cascade Hops - last 5min
1oz Amarillo Aroma Hops - last 2min

I stupidly never took an OG (first brew mistakes)
I also didn't top off with enough water :drunk:

Still tastes great

(Don't mind the dirty glass my water sucks here, which I don't use to brew)

Welcome to the hobby! Looks like a great recipe. Lotta hops! How did you chill? I've been playing with chill rate assumptions impact on hop utilization and finding it is possible to get a lot of IBU from those late additions.

Ice bath on the first one, no wort chiller.

I remember it chilling down to about 80 pretty quickly, maybe about 20 minutes. I topped off with 1gallon of almost frozen spring water which bought it down to pitching temperatures right away.

I just tasted my first un-finished bottle tonight and besides not being carbonated yet it actually tastes pretty good.

I know I will get hammered by the advance brewers here by saying this. But, I don't think an OG read is that important for extract brewing. It's nice info, but your not dealing with worrying about the efficiency of your mash and sparge system and process. That's why I do it. You will no doubt get good beer regardless.

Am I correct to say you would still need it to calculate the alcohol content of the finished beer?

I was sure to take it on my second brew for this reason, I was off from my target OG by .001. It'll be in the primary for another week or two, then I may rack some of it on to coffee and see how that goes.

If you're going to measure gravity, then definitely stir the wort before pulling you sample. Otherwise it could have a gradient that would give a mis-reading and possibly cause some angst. Again, with extract if you get it all in and mixed with the proper amount of water you will hit your target. And always remember, as long as you don't forget the yeast, you will have beer!:rockin:

I haven't (just outside Valley Forge here) but then again the website says February so I'll give it another week before getting upset (plus I think I will be at the brewery next weekend.)

I took the wort from the kettle to primary, then topped off. Then pass the wort from primary to bottling bucket back to primary back to bottling bucket back to primary (both sanitized), take sample then pitch. :mug:
