Hey all, I am new to the forum and a new brewer as well :mug:

After brewing our first and second batch we noticed that we had done something during cooling that is not mentioned in any instruction you find here or online.

Instead of cooling the wort in the kettle we actually transferred the kettles hot contents to the carboy and allowed it to cool inside the carboy before pitching our yeast. I was wondering if you guys know what kind of affect this would have on the outcome of our brew. It has been vigorously fermenting since about the 5th hour after pitching.

we cooled down the carboy with a mixture of icewater and had the wort cooled in about 45 minutes.

Any input would be great. Thanks guys.
 
I put the BK in the sink,pour ice in the empty space around it to the top,then top off with cold tap water. Chills down to pitch temp in about 20 minutes.
 
Don't do that in a Better Bottle... You will melt it!!
Watch out doing that in glass. Cold glass and hot wort don't mix. As stated already that is a recipe for shattering your carboy.
 
I agree with Yooper. That's not real safe. That's probably why you have never seen it on here or other places. Hot liquid into a glass container can cause it to shatter or crack. And it will melt a better bottle.

What it sounds like you're doing is a partial boil. That's done a lot. But usually people keep the wort in the kettle and add water/ice to achieve their intended volume. It works fine that way. A lot of people also just set the kettle into an ice bath too.

But I seriously wouldn't go pouring boiling liquid into a glass carboy. That's a lot of hot liquid. If it suddenly cracks you're screwed.

Agreed! And they generally don't just crack and leak, they tend to almost explode.
 
Thanks for all the replies... thankfully it was being poured into a 6 gallon bucket for fermentation so the only thing i was worried about was the bucket mealting. I will definitely be sure to cool down in the kettle from now on to avoid disaster.

Oh thought you said you were using a Carboy. Use an ice bath method. Put the lid on at flame out and set the kettle in a tub of ice water. Top off your boil volume Keep the lid on as much as possible and let it cool. This is where aluminum kettles shine.

How big is your BK?

Then you should be doing full boils I doing a 5gal batch. I'd stick used using the ice bath method and leaving the lid on as much as possible.
