New Mead Brewer from Panhandle Florida

Between work and four kids, I decided it was time for me to have a hobby that I could enjoy. I have a sweet tooth, and figured Mead would be fun to play with, since it's not that common.

I've been browsing the net for several months, reading up, and decided it was time to try.

Luckily there is a home brew store in Tallahassee, which is a little drive for me, but we have family there, so I hijacked the family during Thanksgiving and visited the local store. Home Brew Den, they were great, and a lot of help.

Today I'm starting several 1 gallon batches to sample. They are:
1. A regular Mead
2. Cherry Melomel
3. Wild Orange
4. Kyser
5. Pineapple Melomel

Most of the recipes are either from storm the castle, or this site.

So far I've had a blast just getting started.
I'll try to post an update as I go, and look forwarding to talking with others about making Mead. If you've read this far, thanks!

I haven't been to the Pensacola area since we used to go for spring break in high school. We now take family vacations in Saint George almost every year and I have some family friends that live in Perry. Tate's Hell is a beautiful drive into that area of Florida. Good luck with the mead and let us know how everything works out.

Hopefully you mentioned you were a Mead maker to John or Sarah when you visited Homebrew Den. They can get you on the right track. The North Florida Brewers League (my old club) has several talented mead makers and they can be a resource. Having a good LHBS is an important asset. You are fortunate to have to make that occassional trip to Tally, Homebrew Den is a very good shop.

Oh yeah. I was looking around at the wine kits, and the beer kits with puzzled stares. I had my list with me, and I believe Sarah is who helped me. She was SUPER nice. I told her that I had several Mead recipes I wanted to try, and this would be my first attempt, and she spent the next 45 mins showing me around and answering questions. Was a great visit.
