I've not read the full thing, but there's plenty of other "first new lager strains in decades" kicking around, notably the Renaissance ones like Lallemand Novalager.

Suregork of this parish was creating new cerevisiae/eubayanus hybrids a decade ago, and I'm sure I've seen someone doing similar with Patagonian "wild" eubayanus in the past, but it may have been this group who have now got round to publishing.
