Any advice and what direstion to go first? Since this will be the first batch brewed and i am using a kit. Thinking extract and would like to go right to the favorite porter.

Hi fellow Oregonian,
I just started home brewing last year, I started with a pale ale, turned out great! When the first batch turns out great your hooked !
I ordered a brew kit from HomeBrew Heaven in Wa. I jumped in at about the $200. level kit, plus shipping. Not putting H H down, but if I were to do it again, I'd get the MoreBeer kit #3, with free shipping. Everything you need except the extract kit. Their catalog is one of the best I've seen. Lots of brewing info, and great pictures and descriptions of their stuff. Get one of those for sure!
I think starting with an extract kit is the best way to begin, pretty straight forward, and less equipment needed.
Good luck, and have fun!
