Hi everyone. I've been perusing the site for a few months now getting some tips for my new interest. I just registered yesterday, so I figured I'd give a brief introduction.
I'm a recent graduate from N.C. State University in Raleigh (Go Wolfpack!) in Chem. Engineering. Kind of got interested in home brewing because a lot of design teams in our senior class worked with some local breweries doing optimization projects, equipement design, etc. After seeing their presentations/projects and learning the science behind beer making, I got hooked. Additionally, I focused in Biomanufacturing and currently work at a local biomanufacturing drug company. Basically, we use cells/microorganisms to make products. Naturally, fermentating beer using yeast struck my fancy!
Toured a few of the local micro breweries, tasted 'real' beer, asked some questions, read some books, and now im completely hooked. Right now by biggest problem is not spending all my money on equipment I dont need yet.
I brewed my first batch of extract/specialty grain Pale Ale about 16 days ago. Everything went pretty smoothly; a few minor glitches that were expected with my first time, but I think I handled sanitation well - which was my biggest concern.
Batch is sitting in secondary carboy right now; FG readings were within spec during racking, without any signs of contamination. My biggest worry is oxidation right now because I wasn't the smoothest with the 'Automatic' self-start siphon.
Regardless, I'm eagerly awaiting bottling day.
Thanks for taking the time to read and I look forward to being involved in the forumn.
P.S. If anyone knows of any decent groups/clubs in the Raleigh/Durham/Cary, NC area, or if you want to just get together, let me know!
Regards,
Chris
