I've been wanting to try this a long time and finnally got started. I've been reading some of the forums and there's alot of good imfo here. I'll need all the help I can get. This is going to be fun!

Welcome aboard! You've come to the right spot! Are you in the "planning the first batch" phase?

Actually, I have my first batch in primary and waiting. Have a question though. What is a blow off on the secondary and why do you need it? is this for top fermenting yeast?

Shouldn't need a blow off for the secondary. A blow off tube is a large diameter tube that you run from your primary down into a pan of sanitized water. It is used in the event that an active beer starts to "blow through" the airlock, or in many cases, blows the airlock out and gushes over. By using a larger tube, you allow the blow off to run out without having to repaint your ceiling (it happens!). By the time you get to secondary, all of your primary fermentation will be complete, and you can use a normal airlock.

Thanks for the imput Truble, Like I said ,this is all new and I've got alot to learn!

I've found the best deals by ordering online from midwest supplies out of Minneapolis. Good luck!

There is also a new store in Racine, it operates out of DP Wigley downtown. The building is over 100 years old and looks like it's about to fall over, but in a back corner they have a fairly good selection of supplies, and if they don't have it they can order it.

Because of timing issues with their hours I've only shopped there once, so I don't know how knowledgeable they are as far as questions, but you should be able to get most of your recipe ingredients and (simpler) equipment there.

(Edit) There is also a homebrew club that meets there once a month, but I've never managed to hook up with them, I'm usually too busy and I'm not very social :)
