New carry-on bag recommendations?

It's time to get a new carry-on bag for traveling. I don't want to spend much, but I want something decent that will roll well, be hard-sided, light, and durable.

Does anybody have any recommendations?

I can't really say a brand, but a required feature I rely on is a detachable strap on the top to latch your computer bag so it hangs low and counter weights the whole rollaboard while pulling so there is zero weight on the extended handle.

Delsey brand. I have been using their hard luggage for a while and it has taken a lot of abuse. On the cheaper side too.

Ha. I was going to say anything BUT Delsey. When we travel by air it's always international and the Delsey products we've had just do not hold up to the abuse.

It appears the airlines are getting together and creating new standards with carry on luggage again.
Flew to New Orleans on united two weeks ago and was told this by a check in agent.

The new dimensions are 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5. Not a lot out there yet in that size yet .

I use a victronix hard sided spinner that has held up well for 50 or so flights, but of course will be deemed too big in the near future.

Been travelling for work 25+ weeks a year, one bag, 16 years- Briggs and Riley. Lifetime warranty repairs have made this expensive bag pay for itself.

OTOH, I just bought this Patagonia bag for <4 day trips, way easier to fit in the overhead, and it is amazing what'll fit into it. http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/arbor-duffel-60-liters?p=49270-0

But I am a hardcore traveler, Costco has great values too, and for a typical traveler they'll last years.

fwiw, it appears the blowback from that proposal essentially sank it for the time being.

The Spousal Unit bought a pair of these a few years ago especially for our Euro travels.
We've gone two weeks with what we can fit in these with no problems at all...

How much of a deal-breaker are 100%-hard sides? Timbuk2, while better-known for messengers bags, makes rolling bags that are nigh-on indestructible. It drags around an airport very well &#8211; the pull-out handle is rigid aluminum rather than flimsy plastic, and it's got big, chunky rollerskate wheels instead of those skinny little rollerblade wheels you'll usually find. However, only the back is really rigid; the other sides are this tough woven nylon material, and hold the bag's shape pretty well, but you can deform it if you try.

Doesn't matter the brand, all that matters is the warranty. I bought an expensive REI carry on that I love and it had a lifetime warranty, but they don't do that anymore AFAIK.

I bought a Samsonite bag from Costco that I took around the world multiple times over (think china, Siberia, Australia...) It had a ten year warranty, but at year 7 the zipper messed up (loaned it to my girlfriend for a trip to Vegas!) Costco refunded me in full, no questions and without a receipt more than 7 years after the fact. I'm not sure they even care if it's past the warranty.

I bought a set from then with that money and will likely never buy luggage again...

I did end up with an American Tourister Duralite 360 spinner.

I got a great price, and the reviews were pretty positive.

In the teal color, it was $58.81 on Amazon. As long as it makes it through a couple of trips, I'd say it was a good deal. If it lasts longer, that's a bonus.

I will know after using it if I like this style or not. It's a hard sided but expandable 20". so there is a soft place in the middle for the two zippers- one is the zipper to open it, one is the expansion zipper. I know it'll be fine as a carryon, but I may very well check it on a return flight home (because I'll be packing beer I assume). We'll see then how it holds up to some abuse.

How did they know how much to give you back if you didn't have a receipt, and if it wasn't costco brand how did they know you got it from them?
I bought two sets of hard shell luggage from Costco. Usually use the two middle size and a small carry-on for family trips.
But my brother managed to pull one of the handles off! He swears he was just picking it up and it popped off. Anyway, I didn't think I could return it because it was from a few years ago and I don't have the receipt, though I really don't use them much and it shouldn't have broken...

Every single transaction you make at Costco is recorded to your membership profile. It took the lady like 10 minutes to scroll through 7 years of transactions, but she found it.

The brands change all the time but if the bag has a legible tag on it anywhere and you can give them a ballpark time reference they'll find it and refund it.
