My buddy and I decided to start brewing beer a while back. So we cleaned out a basement room or our living complex and started brewing last week. So far we have bottled an IPA and have a vanilla wit in primary fermentation. Have been doing research here for a while, and decided to post only after I have tried everything first. 1 week until the IPA is ready. The wit should be ready on the 12th

It seems pretty small in relation to what I saw last time I was in Texas. But the annual beer festival is in two weeks, so I will find out more about it there. For the most part it seems that the majority are still content drinking Carlsberg and Tuborg. Hopefully that will change soon.

Welcome! It's rather sad how the beer scene is shrinking in Europe just when craft brewing is reviving the industry in the US.

Godag, dansk ven.

I can not speak for all of Europe, but only that which I have seen of Scandinavia. In Norway and Sweden it seems that they are shying away from beer brewing, and leaning more towards the brewing of 'hooch' and 'moonshine'. This I think is due to their strict laws on how the percentage of the beer can not be above 3% or something ridiculously low (Someone that lives there is more than welcome to correct me if I am wrong).

I know Denmark has a very strong beer drinking culture, and there are I think 5 or 6 microbreweries in Copenhagen alone. So in a city of 1 million that is quite a lot, though due to taxes these beers are pretty pricey for a poor student. Nobody over here crafts any wheat beers that I can enjoy inexpensively. So I will just have to make my own.

Ingen problem da. Jeg er selv fra Texas, så jeg skriver og snakker også lidt mærkeligt. Tak, jeg glæder mig til mit første smagning.

Velkommen. Godt å se flere europeiske medlemmer her.

(Håper at du forstår mitt norsk :p)

Jeg kan også godt forstår dit sprog. Jeg elsker Norske piger så jeg har trænet mit Norsk lidt.

Actually, beers up to 4.5% can be purchased at the supermarket. Any alcoholic beverages over that though, can only be purchased at the state-controlled Vinmonopolet.

We have only one American craft brew in our local 'polet. Flying Dog's Snake Dog IPA, which I have yet to try. In Oslo, there's only 7...

The Snake Dog is 40,30 ,- NOK for a 12 oz bottle... at current rates, that's US$6.12.

Not so great value.

Anyhoo... velkommen... og skål!

Vikingbrew, don't shortchange Tuborg! IMHO, Tuborg Green is probably the perfect pilsener. I rediscovered it on a vacation trip to Denmark in 2007. Not knowing what to buy, I picked up 6 Carlsbergs and 6 Tuborg Green bottles one evening. The greens were my favorites by far. I have since been searching for a recipe so I can make it myself back here (WA), but so far no luck. Anyone?

In our homebrewing circles, pilseners have an undeserved bad reputation as mass-market, low-quality beer. I think an important reason for that is that Budwiser calls its beer "pilsener", even though it is far removed from the style, and frankly, unworthy. American craft brewers make many excellent, bold beers (IPA, APA, stout, porter, California Common...), and I love them all, but the good pilseners seem to elude them. I think it would open many eyes if we could buy Tuborg Green over here. As far as I can tell, it is not available anywhere in the U.S.

Now if you could get a good Tuborg Green recipe out of them danes, I would be indebted to you foerever.

Skål! You danish people have some really microbrew, Ölbutikken is a great store (even though I'm still a bit mad at them for closing while I was visiting the cash machine).

:D

Wow, sure are lots of Scandahoovians on the beer forum, ain't that a big surprise. I came on this morning to find a Tuborg recipe, I got a big fat lager yeast starter in need of a crisp beer to sit out in my cool garage all winter.
Welcome to the club fellow herring eater.
