Hello!

I've been lurking your forums ever since I started my 1st batch of brew last Saturday. (a partial grain stout)

There is obviously a great community here, along with a wealth of knowledge and I can't wait to absorb all of it.

I picked up "The Complete Joy of Home brewing" a few weeks ago as the idea of brewing my own beer seemed not only economical, but rewarding. After reading that volume nearly cover-to-cover I felt comfortable enough to make an investment.

I headed to my LHBS and was set up with a good starter kit. I'm glad I didn't bother w/ a Mr. beer kit. I wanted to try a recipe out of my book, and was informed by the proprietor that the book I had was basicly crap, and to listen to him instead. I left w/ my starter kit and ingredients:

1lb roasted barley
1/2 lb belgian black
1lb hugh baird 80 crystal

6lbs coopers DME

2oz northern brewer german (1.2 bittering, .8 finishing)

a vial of wlp001

and corn sugar for priming

I have followed his instructions to a T and am now happily fermenting. (it took 24 hours and a little temp. adjustment to start. My OG was also strangely high. About 1065.)

Anybody out there in the bay area have any recommendations? Are there any other shops I should visit? I am very excited about expanding my operation and brewing on a consistent and regular basis.

I cannot recommend these guys too highly. Great shop, great service, fantastic selection and always samples on tap.

There's nothing wrong with the "Joy of Brewing" it's a good book "How to Brew" by John Palmer is more up to date. And you can read his first edition free online at www.howtobrew.com

There seems to be a great club out there called Bay Area Mashers they have a really informative article on Iodine sanitizers.

Welcome to the forum.:mug:
