This is my fifth batch, but only the first time I've seen this behavior before. This is also the first one I've done outside the safety net of a "kit". Also my first time using a liquid yeast (White labs San Francisco Lager I believe). Everything went flawless and all of my equipment sat soaking in Star San for the entire boil, so everything should've been clean. The only time I got tripped up was after I'd filtered the wort into the carboy and realized I hadn't saved any for the hydrometer. I accidentally backwards racked some sanitizer into the wort and then in my frustration I started the siphon to the hydrometer flask with my mouth. Now I'm stressing that I gave my wort a mouth-to-wort infection

Pics were taken about 16 hours after pitching yeast. There is minimal airlock activity.

Yep that's normal. Shooter's right some yeast forms up really freaky looking, and it looks also like some break material is coming out as well. Fermentation is often and ugly thing, on normal days.

I wish I could remember the thread with the pic of the krauzen that formed looking like a human brain in fermaldahyde.
 
Come back when the foam grows hair and starts talking: this looks perfectly fine :D
 
Especially after only 16 hours I would say you are golden. I don't know what it is but every time I use Pacman yeast I get brown clouds/clumps on top of the foam/krausen

Yeah, fermentation is often disgusting and cannot be unseen but at the same time beautiful. That looks 100% normal.

keep the beer away from sun, I am assuming that you moved the fermenter there for picture purposes though:fro:

yeah, I wanted to actually get decent pics for my non-infection thread.. gotta break some traditions I suppose.

I live in an old apartment that has two california coolers. They're entirely separated from light, and pitch black inside, with a nice draft from the basement to keep them cold. The beer usually sits in there, on top of a pile of 71 year old copies of The Oakland Tribune (which have some very very strange classifieds in them).
