So I'm wanting to brew an IPA and I'm having a hard time finding / deciding on a recipe.

I'm only 2 batches into my brewing career and subsequently I have no idea on what a good recipe for any type of beer looks like. As a side note I am doing extract brewing with steeping grains.

I've done a fair share of research and I've seen way too many recipes for me to make sense of.

Here are a few examples...

Kinda scary IPA

2 lbs American 2-row - steeped to just before boil
12 lbs Amber LME
1 oz Nugget - added gradually between 60 and 35 minutes
1 oz Simcoe - added gradually between 35 and 20 minutes
1 oz Amarillo - added gradually between 20 and 0 minutes

Wyeast German ale yeast
current plan is to dry-hop 1/2 oz each of Simcoe and Amarillo

I'm looking for a hoppy beer with a good bite to it, but maybe not as much as a IIPA. I'm a little thrown off by some of the high DME volumes and obviously the high hop levels. I'm not sure what looks right or not.

Can anyone help me pick one of these or give me a good suggestion on another recipe that would be a good brew?

Again, I'm pretty new to this (Homebrewing for Dummies has reached the limit of it's help), so any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dennis

2row needs to be mashed doesnt it...whats with the steeping in the first recipe and whats the point? curious.

You should probably drop the 2 row and get some Crystal 40 or 60 to steep. I always like Victory malt in my IPA's. Any reason for the German Ale yeast? How big is your boil size?

That first recipe that I listed is just one of many that I've found on this website and others. The 2row was the original author's idea and I just copied the recipe into this thread.

I'm just trying to find a good recipe that others have tried and I can have a reasonable expectation of a good IPA when it comes out of the bottles!

I'm actually leaning towards the IPA (Extract) recipe, but I'm not sure why...I think that it seems the most balanced of the four.

But I'm really looking for advice on any of the recipes or another recipe that some one can suggest.

The single most important thing you can do right now is get a thermomenter and brew anything while you learn to hold your steeping grains betweeen 138° and 155° F.

When you can do that try some PM recipes.
