Hey guys just did my first batch in about a year. Couple of things happened that I worry about a lil bit. I made a cooling tub out of a tupper that was in the garage been in there a months didnt look dirty. When cooling the pot i was holding in the water a bit and a little got in the pot. Problem?

Also when pulling off samples I had to dip my hand in the wort a bit. It was sanitized. Problem? And is there a better way to pull samples?

thanks for the help

use a thief, or a turkey baster. sanitized. the dirty-ish water. yea i'd be a little worried. were you like pushing the pot down into the bath?

next time use ice only or ice and rock salt, and if the level stays at or near the level of brew in the pot, you should be Ok. I spin my kettle in a 15Gal metal pail filled with ice and salt for about 10 to 15 minutes and my wort is ready to aerate and pitch.

how did you sanitize your hand?

Yea i was pushing it a bit and I looked up to say something to a friend and a little got it...ill try that next time with just ice.

Probably fine, I've put my hand into my buckets while trying to mix wort and top off water and no problems yet.

Whats everyone else think?

As long as fermentation starts quickly, you are most likely fine.

I also think you need to invest a couple dollars in a thief - or at least a turkey baster, and buy yourself an immersion chiller. I have a stainless one. Cheaper than copper, easy to clean, and works just as well as copper in practice. Either way, you will be more than glad you did.

Pez.

Don't know when it started but finished at 11 last night was bubbling at 7

I'm not sure what you are saying. Are you saying fermentation is done by hydrometer readings? How many days/weeks did it ferment? I was under the impression you just put this into the fermentor?

Yea I did sorry what I meant was. I put in fermenter at 11pm last night central time. When I awoke at 7 am this morning it was bubbling.

In the beginning I used a turkey baster to pull samples for SG readings. Now I just sanitize the hydrometer and plop it directly into the fermenter.
