Need Kegging asnwer FAST

Ok so I just put my beer on the c02 for the first time.

Let me run down the steps I did things so you can better answer my question.
1. I checked kegs for gas leaks. ( beforte beer was in there.
2. once beer was in I put the gas in diconnect on the corny ( the beer line out disconnect is not attached.
3. Then I turned on the gas, and dialed my psi to 12 with the regulator to tubing lever closed.
4. Now here comes the problem.... I then opened the valve from regulator to keg and.......my psi started to slowly rise without me touching anything until it his around 24 and stayed.

Is this supposed to happen, and it will eventually lower back down?
Or is the psi strength that is recommended to be set only valid prior to opening the valve, after which it changes...?
I also only have 4 gallons of beer in the keg, could this be doing anything?
Or do I have a regulator that is broken? When I turn the regulator screw out once it is reading 24 psi it does not lower unless the valve is closed to the keg...but it will rise if I tighten it in.

Simple...first off calm down and don't worry. Take your gas line off and turn the regulator to 0. It should blow all the excess pressure off of the line. Is the keg cold? If so then shake it for a few min and then hook the gas line back up. Then just turn your regulator to what ever psi you are wanting. Normally I give my chilled kegs about 3 days at 25 psi then let em sit for a few days off the gas then hook back up at 13psi for a week then drink.

Turn your gas line down to 0 PSI then hook up to the keg.

Then turn your screw up to 12 PSI.

If you have it set at 12 it should stay at 12. If not then it's faulty.

Hopefully someone more experienced can give the ins and outs of why this happens, but it is not an issue, and mine does the same thing. Just open your valve on your regulator and then adjust the screw until it hits where you want it. When I adjust PSI with the valve closed, it is nowhere close to where it ends up once the valve is open.

Awesome, took it off, gave it a shake, put it back on, and it seems to be staying where it is supposed to now. Thanks for the quick help!

I had a similar problem myself and found that if I attach the gas line and open the valve then adjust the psi I have no issues.

Be careful about turning your regulator down and then hooking up to a pressurized keg...the higher pressure might push beer back into your regulator.

That is exactly what I do to. If I adjust the PSI, then open the valve, it is way off.

Good point. Always hit the release valve on the keg before reconnecting to a PSI-reduced tank.

Or install some cheap check valves on all your gas lines.
