Ok so Iam making a DIPA sunday using wyeast 1056, I only have a 2 liter flask and a growler, my question is if I do a 2 liter flask starter using half of my smack pack and a 1 liter starter in my growler using the other half of my smack pack will this work? My gravity will be 1.084

from what everyone is telling me 2 liters will not be enough for a gravity of 1.084 Mr malty is saying 3.2 liters

IME that would give you the equivalent of a 1.5 liter starter. 1/2 of the yeast needed for that amount of wort.

Guessing at mid January for production date on your yeast mrmalty suggests 2.41 liters of starter using 2 vials or packs of yeast. Based on intermittent shaking.

To use only one vial of yeast you would need to use a stirplate and make a 3.89 liter starter.

That's almost a gallon starter! Get serious. That yeast is a monster do we treat every yeast the same in terms of how much of a starter to use? Do you make 4 gallons of beer to add 1 gallon of starter to it? Seems outrageous to me.

It does seem outrageous, but 1) most people decant the starter before pitching and 2) it would be significantly smaller if OP had a stir plate.

Outrageous or not, these are Jamil's recommendations, and he knows more than all of us about this stuff.

I've started buying US-05 dry yeast. It's the same as WLP001/WY1056, and one pack is almost always enough (or close enough)

A 1 gallon starter is not unusual for a big beer. Most people chill the starter overnight in the fridge so the yeast settle to the bottom, pour off the spent wort and pitch only the yeast into the intended batch size.
