My Wyeast was activated when I received it in the mail; package looked like the Hindenburg.

Can I do anything with it? I received it ~ 8 days after they shipped it. I'm not planning on starting my first batch until January. I hate to throw away the little buggers if I can salvage them. Starter ? They've been in my fridge since I got them home (+3 days).

My other option would be (if it's not too late already) to do my first ever brew this weekend and leave it unattended for 3 weeks in the fermenter (I'll be out of town).

Any recommendations ?

Happy Brewing….

If you can monitor the first few days of fermentation, I would say just go ahead and brew - just to keep an eye for blow-offs and what not. And certainly make a starter, you can probably still salvage the little guys.

leaving it for 3 weeks will be just fine, in fact, really good for your first brew. this will eliminate the temptation to drink it too soon.

also, you could do a starter, let it ferment and then refrigerate until you're ready to use it.

Thanks guys... I'll do my first ever this weekend then ! I'll have ~3 days to watch it before I go on vacation.

I did contact William's Brewing and a new pack is on the way. I just hate to toss out the little guys....

Yeah, definitely play with them - they may be stressed, but should certainly still be alive.
