My brewing vocabulary sucks. I have to look stuff up constantly when I'm Readin it on here. Help!

We were discussing this while brewing this weekend. My buddy's wife wants to understand brewing but is constantly thrown for a loop by all the terms. She's frustrated because when she says "what's that mean?" we can always give her a normal english word for it instead of the brewer's word - she just wants it to all be clear english instead of the traditional words. My wife just glazes over and ignores me.

i was looking at this but more in the acronyms. is there a spot where all these are listed

It is funny that my wife has learned all the terminology becuause of listening to me all the time.

But of course she likes good beer, got me into the hobby and supports my passion for brewing.

All specialties have their own terms that have been established over the years. The alternative is we could all have our discussions in kindergarden english and have really long descriptions. Its all about economy of conversation.

Its either:
...those tiny, single cell animals that I encouraged to reproduce themselves by putting them in warm water with barley that I had crushed, and then soaked in warm water then drained off the water...

or:
Yeast starter.

Your friend's wife is boring. She should learn all of the acronyms so she can sound superior to non brewers. It's one of the perks of the hobby. :cross:

It just takes time.. before I ever brewed and was just scratching the surface I was thinking DME meant dark malt extract and LME meant light.. then I figured out DME is dry malt extract and LME is liquid.

In my opinion it helps to understand how it works, not just that it works as well.
carapils, caramalt, caraxxx -- is telling you that that particular grain has been caramelized for instance. This is widely unimportant to the new brewer, but you will need to know this should you decide to move beyond pre-formulated extract recipes and start crafting your own from grain only.
