BTW, we are crate training, she sleeps in it happily every night. We don't believe in leaving her in the crate if we're not home however.

thus your couch got owned.

Don't feel bad about puttin them in there. If you crate train correctly, they'll like it in there. It's their space, it's their time. That's how it's supposed to be. It's not for punishment. Don't ever put it in there for punishment, that is wrong. If you do that they will feel bad everytime they're in there and totally blow up the crate training goal.

Don't be like a billion people that go by the motto "it's my [insert pet]'s house, I just live there." It's YOUR house. YOU are the leader, not the pet. Now I don't mean beat it or starve it or whatever, but don't be afraid of setting things straight with the dog and have it make you feel like you're not in control of your own house. You have to have limits on your pets, no matter if you feel bad or not.

Why do you think 90% of ankle biters are worthless, barking, jumping, chewing, piles of crap until their too old to do anything? Because the owners think they're "so cute" and treat them like royalty that they think they rule the planet, and are too bull-headed to realize that that big 'ol 120 lb shepherd they're yiping at could eat them in one bite.

"Oh [insert cliche girly small dog name here; daisy, precious, snickers, etc.] doesn't let anyone tell her what to do! SHE'S the boss."

Sorry for the rant. I'm not sayin I have the perfect dogs by any means, nor am I saying that your dog sucks or anything, but I'd hate to see it lead to worse things. I've been there. I had a PITA german shepherd once... I don't want anyone to experience the crap I went through with that guy. The couch AND LOVESEAT looked 100x worse than yours. It's not good to be able to see the floor through the cushions. lol

Sometimes we must do things we don't want to (go to work?) or make our kids do things they don't want to (take math, brush teeth, etc) simply because it's for their own good. Same goes for pets. And besides; if the dog is home alone; THAT in and of itself is the way bigger issue to the dog than whether or not it's in a crate. Dogs hate being alone. Leaving them home alone is way more 'cruel' than putting them in a crate (and neither is cruel by any stretch).

I pen mine up in the kitchen now but it was a crate for years. Doesn't matter much, he doesn't touch any chews/toys when he's alone anyway. He won't even eat. When you consider how much dogs sleep, most of that time is spent sleeping anyway.

Don't get me wrong, my dog loves being in her crate and she has access to it during the day, but I think it should be her decision to go in the or not. We also NEVER punish her, it's just not going to help her learn. We leave her penned into our tiled area, which is quite puppy-proofed at this point. She has her toys, her crate, and her water dish - plenty of stuff to keep her occupied. This really was an isolated incident, and it literally occurred within the span of 30 minutes after my wife left and I got home, and it was also very specific circumstances (i.e. already had a slight tear in the fabric which she just happened to catch with her claw). We leave her up to 8 hours a day sometimes (though generally more like 4-5) and she's never done anything even close to this. She actually does most of her damage when we are home, sitting no more than 5 ft away from her.

Even if we did crate her during the day, I feel it is cruel to leave an animal caged up for too long (couple of hours is fine, but any more and it's unfair - they're not people but they have personalities and are capable of logical thought). It's usually quite evident that she's played with some toys while we're out or chewed on her bone, and I wouldn't want to her to be unable to entertain herself like that. Not to mention she wouldn't be able to get a drink of water!

Over a year ago, we bought two Shi-tzus from the same litter. We kept one as company for our other dog, and gave the other one to my wife's daughter. ours was allowed free range and told when he did something wrong. The other was kept in a cage at wifey's daughter's home for long periods. Often in a cage all day while she was at work.

It eventually became evident to us that this dog was not being well looked after. Too long in the cage, only let out to give hugs and take a crap etc.

So we now have three dogs. The one that was always caged up took a lot of adjustment to his new surroundings, but is fine and happy now, but is strangely cuboid.

It is embarrassing when i walk them. two normal dogs, and a strange box shaped one. All the kids point at him and laugh at his shape.

yeah, it was funny when the Japanese were making square melons, but honestly folks, don't do it to your dog. They won't thank you for it.
