My new fermenter carbed my beer while fermenting I think?

I just built a 1BBL system and used a SS 55 gallon drum as a fermenter. It is a close top lid but I cut a 14" diameter hole out. I used a 15" diameter SS circle with a silicon gasket to put on top. I also uses an 1/2 hose barb with 5' of hose to release Co2.

I racked some beer to test today after 8 days in the fermenter and the beer appears to be slightly carbonated. Anyone ever heard of this? Is this even possible?

My beer gets slightly carbonated in a 6 gallon bucket after a month in primary, I can see yours being even more so with that much volume
on top of the beer on the bottom of the fermenter.

The deeper you go the more pressure there is to keep the gas in solution, hell I had 5 gallons of apfelwein in a 5 gallon carboy for 2 months
and when I went to bottle some of the bottles filled half way with foam there was so much co2

never had as much as stat said. but i do regularly notice trace amounts of co2 in the beers. (the one i just racked had a little). its always faint, but i do notice it sometimes. i would think having more in a system your size would be normal.

Okay that makes sense. I was racking from side valve at the bottom so theres about 30 gallons of beer on top. I guess it doesn't hurt the beer either right?

All fermenting beers have co2 in it. But that doesn't mean it's fully carbonated. But since it sounds like your in a closed fermenting system, I wouldn't be surprised if you had more co2 in solution that those of us with buckets. But it wouldn't mean you'd have a full head, and lots of lacing proteins.

Not sure on the question. C02 is a product of fermentation, all my samples I take for hydro checks are fizzy. Maybe it's exaggerated by the size of the batch?

More importantly, how did it taste?

It tasted just fine. I guess being that I've never fermented 35g at time I was little thrown when I noticed had carbonation bubbles around the rim of the glass. It was definitely carbonated more than what I've been used to with 5 gallon batches.

Many people do this intentionally. In my case I had a blocked gas out port on my fermenter and wound up with an almost fully carbed beer by accident. I am happy to let my beer ferment without intervention so I don't do this method except in that one case.
