I'm a pretty new 1Gallon brewer having done mainly BBS kits.

I was thinking of doing some SMaSH recipes to learn about hops/flavors.

My thought was to order these hops (Amarillo, Citra, Chinook, Cascade, Saaz), but was wondering if I could match these with something like a 2-row and use a yeast like US-05?

Or would there be a better hop-grain-yeast combination?

Any help would be great!

So many possibilities but it looks like you covered most of them. US05 is a great yeast for this to keep things clean and really let the flavors shine through. Don't forget Simcoe as well as Centennial for your hops.

Here is another thread with more info for you.

If you get bored with 2-row you can always try a Vienna or Marris Otter smash

I'd like to start doing some 1 gallon smash beers. I'd start with 4 hop varieties, and brew each one with 2 row and us05 like you said, then move on to grains and use a clean dual purpose hop and make Vienna, MO, Pilsen and maybe Red X. Finally I'd use 2 row and the same clean hop and switch yeasts each time to see the different flavors and aromas each strain adds, like a UK, Belgian, German and maybe a Saison yeast. That's 12 smash beers, brewed once a month that's a lot of knowledge gained in a year, or you can double up on brew days and be done in 6 months. That's just an idea, one I'd like to try out. If you're learning hop aromas and flavors, then you certainly picked the right yeast and grain

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure I was on the right path. I figure I'll start with hops, and then I might try different grains like Vienna, MO, etc..
