Hi all.. wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with this one. I want to make beer at home and then move it to a friends basement for fermentation, and then bottling.

Anyone have any good suggestions as to when I can make the move?

Thanks

How far is the drive going to be?

Im quite the newb, but I think you have a few options -

1 -Make the beer at home, start the primary at home. Once your hydro readings are stable, move the beer - carefully. Do not remove the airlock, and the CO2 should protect it.

2-Brew the wort at home, then transfer the wort. This is a little trickier, and you may need to do some more research, but its certainly possible - search for "no chill brewing", there was a pretty long thread on this not too long ago. Pitch the yeast at your buddy's house.

3- Just brew it at your friends house and don't worry about it.

I think that sorta wraps it up, but im sure someone around here has much better suggestions.

Good luck!

I'm sure way more experienced brewers will come along and answer this for you, but I think your best bet is to make the beer at home, put the wort in the carboy, transfer it to your friend's basement, then pitch your yeast once you have the carboy where it will stay.

How are you getting it there? I would probably toss the beer into a corny, move it, then swap out the center plug with an airlock. Should minimize O2 getting in and prevent a glass carboy from shattering.

Well, that is alot of work for a 92 year old to be doing just to make some beer...and a hell of a first post after 2 years!

I think if you use ale-pails, seal them well, they will transport with no problem.

I would agree with using pails. That way you can pitch after cooling and then move it. Carrying carboys up and down staircases has caused problems (read ER) for some members.

Note: I have neither a basement or carboys.

I agree with the guy from the Northshore!
