I liked it. A lot.

First, I love alien movies.

2nd, Amy Adams is super cute.

I thought it was a great movie. There was enough alien to satisfy a scifi lvr, and enough fluff to make it a movie. Left me with thoughts that will fill my dreams. That's what I like.

PS. Forest Whitaker is weird. Bad casting IMO.

From the teasers, I thought it looked a lot like Epoch. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just the impression I got. Still haven't seen it yet, though I might have to put it on my list of things to do after reading the reviews. Regards, GF.

I loved the movie, but I happen to like movies that make you think. I kinda wish I hadn't read the short story first, because I knew what was coming, but it did let me focus on all the details they laid in to get to the end.

I've heard from at least 4 different people (prior to this thread) about this movie and was told to avoid it. All having dissimilar taste in movies, but complaining it was too much of a love story and not enough sci-fi.

I watched with 4 other people 3 of us are in agreement that it was one of (if not) the best movie we'd seen in 2016 and the other person hated it. If you go into it expecting an alien sci-fi extravaganza, you won't be getting that. However, the movie is an example of great story telling and great film-making. It was so much more than a sci-fi movie. I heard it described as a movie about humanity with aliens in it, and I can't agree more. I put it up there with Ex-Machina for movies that stuck with me and made me think afterwards.

I think it's about expectations. Go into it knowing it isn't an action driven thriller and more like a slower moving story that focuses on linguistics instead of the science aspect of alien interaction. It's a departure from the norm, but a really great movie IMHO.

I can see how people would be disappointed if they were expecting something else. I think they did a good job adding in some tension and drama when they adapted the story to a movie. The story lacks a lot of the worldwide drama that the movie contains. But they did a really good job of sticking to the main things the short story was trying to tell. I don't want to say much more than that for fear of spoiling it for anyone that hasn't watched it.

I am in the minority on this one. I did not care for it and I enjoy movies that make you think. I like movies that you are still thinking about days after. I do not like movies that rely on a gimmick in the end to explain everything aka M Night Shyamalan endings. I think it is weak story telling. I believe Arrival relied on a gimmick. I won't go on, don't want to spoil it for others.
