Mounting taps on drywall...

I searched around awhile before asking this. I want to mount my taps going thru a wall directly on the drywall. I'm going to paint with exterior paint, which I'm hoping will be waterproof enough. SWMBO just doesn't like the idea of a wooden backsplash. She kind of wants the whole bar to blend in more with the built in shelves, etc.

Anyone done this? Any problems with condensation? I have mounted a wooden stud behind the drywall for support. I could also get epoxy paint, which should do the trick.

I am open to a backsplash, but don't know how I'd mount it (adhesive? They do sell stainless sheets at macmaster carr.

I'm sure you can get SS sheet at lowes or home depot. Then just some wood trim. You definitely would wants the shanks mounted to the wooden brace behind the drywall and not just the drywall itself. The constant pulling down with the tap handles would surely eventually chip away the hole.

Yeah, without a backsplash of some sort you will most likely destroy the drywall. I used an old wooden plaque base and a 2x4 behind the wall. You want those taps to be nice and tight in the wall.

Epoxy paint would do fine.

Stainless sheet or ceramic would be better.

Here's what I did. I ran the drain through the closet the kegerators in and hooked it up to the sink drain. The back splash was pre-drilled and is held on the wall by the shanks.

I cut a log down the middle and used wood strips behind the wall to secure it. Works pretty well. Next step is the granite tile top and back splash.

I would go for some outlets and a light first.

This is an old picture electrical is done. Tiles next then the shelves next to the bottle fridge and above the taps.

And maybe a drain & water supply for the sink. Unless you just did a really good job hiding them, but I've never seen a p-trap that short.

You may have another issue crop up before long. The shanks will condense moisture in the air, which will get wicked into the gypsum. Besides bubbling the paint, you have a good chance of growing a lot of mold in a place where it will be hard to detect.

If you want to have faucet shanks running through a wall, you need to thoroughly insulate them to avoid condensation. You can either use self-adhesive rubber foam tape or Insultube, both of which are made for insulating the suction lines on A/C/refrigeration systems.

I'm going to go with a finished board between drywall and taps.
