Most accurate type of thermometer

I have several inexpensive digital stick thermometers and find them all fairly accurate.

Maybe I'm lucky idk.

Test your thermometers at boil and an ice packed solution, that may help determine which is more accurate.

I use a CDN 450 ($16). Digital, fairly responsive, and accurate enough for my purposes. Calibrate in a cup with melting ice chips.

Stay away from glass thermometers, they can break and are typically slow as molasses.

Also watch out with those wired probe ones, they tend to fail early because of a broken wire right where the probe crimp is or moisture going inside the probe. Most are not waterproof, only a few are.

Worth every penny, especially if you cook.

PLUS 1+++. Thermapen is the best of the best. I use mine for virtually everything from brewing to cooking, grilling, BBQ's and the list continues.

Look up Thermoworks and subscribe to their mailing list. Occasionally they offer Thermapens in an "Open Box" sale. These are new units with full warranties...I think they just knock off $25 bucks to move out odd color units that may not be selling as well.

Yup. "British Racing Green" wasn't a popular seller, so I got it at a deep discount. I call it Packer Green.

Mash temp is always spot on and those $19/lb. dry-packed scallops don't get overcooked.

OK, I give up, everyone raves about this thermometer, I just ordered one.

Anticipating some Christmas gift money.....

BTW, they're on inventory clearance right now for $87. If you have a $99 order they include a fun-size thermometer for free.

I added a hygrometer (measures humidity) for $19 to get over the $99, and flat-rate shipping is only $3.99.

You'll be very pleased with your purchase. I also have their Chef's Alarm with a submersible sous vide probe. I drop that probe into the center of my mash to monitor temps, plus I set the timer to let me know where I am in the mash cycle. Glad you caught the sale....definitely a good thermometer.

**I bought my mom one for Mother's Day and she uses it for baking, checking the internal temps of casseroles, etc. It is instant read so she doesn't burn her hand in an open oven door while checking.

I've been wanting something I can monitor mash temp with remotely. I wasn't happy w/ the speed and/or accuracy of the digital thermometer I have, so that's why the Thermopen.

I did get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M4Q94MK/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 when Inkbird had a 50-percent intro sale. It's not...bad....bought it for my wife for Christmas, thought I might steal it for brewing....but it's not all that terribly accurate. Good enough for meat temp I suppose, but boiling water registered 208, then 212 (which should be impossible at my altitude). I also mistakenly thought it could be set inside a hot oven or mash chamber. Sadly, not.

I'll look at that Chef Alarm more closely. I like the timing aspects of it.

Well, there are some remote devices out there like the Maverick ET-732 I use for BBQing but the probe is not submersible. Thermoworks has a BBQ monitor called "Smoke" that transmits to a remote receiver and the sous vide optional probe works with the "Smoke" device. The sous vide probe I use also goes with the Chefs Alarm but this device doesn't transmit to a receiver.

A couple years ago, lots of family members had been eyeballing my Thermapen. In August or something, they had a big sale on a drab light gray color PLUS a buy-in-bulk deal. So I got them for my parents, my in-laws, my brother, and my sister-in-law. Worked out to be around $60 apiece.

The were a huge hit all around and we had a big chunk of Christmas shopping done in August.

These make awesome gifts for folks in the know as was in your case.

The newest model (MK4) has some pretty neat advances. Next time you are looking at Thermoworks take a look. Among other new features, the display has a backlight feature which is perfect when doing overnight bbq cooks. I have two of the older classic models and recently bought the new model. There are very few days that go by that I don't pull my Thermapen out of the drawer for something or other

Your gonna love that Thermapen! I have one and use it all the time. Great for checking all your brew related temps, including hydro samples, water for gelatin, wort for yeast starter so you pitch when it's cool enough, etc. I also calibrate my pid's temp probes with this accurate instrument. Does double duty in the kitchen and on the grill too! Great investment you'll love it!

I found the thermapen mk4 on sale on one of the holiday sales. Red, white and blue were something like 15-20% off so I scoooped one up for a Christmas gift.

I like the backlight for barbecuing this time of year since it gets dark earlier, and since its waterproof it won't hurt it when you drop it into the mash. You could also use it if you want to make your own candy syrup. Your friends will like it if they use it until they find out the price.

Order arrived today. I cannot believe the customer service of this place. I received an email give me a ton of information on the Thermapen even before it showed up. I received a couple of shipping notifications, as well as one telling me the order had been delivered.

And the thermapen itself? Holy cow! I somehow thought it was smaller than it actually is, and it's got a very nice heft to it. The thing just reeks of quality. It has a certification indicating that it is on as far as temp calibration, and detailed instructions.

The old saying "You get what you pay for" is true. You get everything you paid for with this, and then some.

I remember thinking the same thing about the size of the unit then looking at more pictures of people using it and feeling foolish for not seeing they had 4 fingers wrapped around it. Enjoy. You'll get plenty of emails from them for sales and recipes or ways to use your thermapen.

They are awesome and worth every penny. Now go grab a steak and cook that sucker to within 0.5° F of perfectly rare!

++1 on the Thermopen. But my go to is the Cooper-Atkins Cool-Rite (Cooper-Atkins TTM41-10 Coolit-Rite Cooling Thermometer HACCP with Adjustable Vessel Clip, 10" Stem Length, -4 to 302 degrees F Temperature Range https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008RBOYY2/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20)
The 10" long probe is really useful for monitoring your HLT, MLT, & chilling/whirlpool progress.
