OK. I have come to the point where I need to get a more reliable thermometer that can be used throughout the brewing process. I really want accurate readings during mash in, cooling and at pitching time.

Any suggestions?.

I don't have one (yet), but Thermapen is pretty well regarded as the gold standard for instant-read thermometers. It's just a question of whether it's worth $96 to you, or if you're willing to trade off a little speed or accuracy to save a lot of money. I personally use a $12 digital pen thermo I bought at Target a while back, which seems to be accurate and that's been pretty reliable.

The thermapen looks nice. Spendy though. I am the kind of guy who wants to be quality at the best price possible. eBay and amazon are my friends. Looks like it's hard to find these for less than $96

My floating thermometer was reading 206 in boiling water and 38 in ice bath. Not sure I can trust it

I use K type thermocouples along with a meter. I have a specific meter just for thermocouples, but many digital multi meters are able to use a thermocouple.

I use that Taylor 9842 and I like it a lot, but I want to try the CDN proaccurate for the larger numbers and the hold feature. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0021AEAG2/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Thanks for the link. Larger numbers? Eyesight failing you? On a side note. I really appreciate all your feedback on this site and your YouTube videos have been very useful. I feel more comfortable jumping into AG after reading and watching your stuff. Thanks
