So....I was bottling my blonde yesterday and I took all of the necessary steps to disinfectant & sanitize bottles in my dishwasher. Well, some of my bottles were from an old batch I had brewed last month. I was pouring in the beer & caught a glimpse of something floating in my 3rd bottle. Turns out it was mold built up on the bottom of the bottles that wasn't fully cleaned. I ended up dumping out the bottle (and beer), I chalked it up to a loss of 1 beer, but there maybe 1 more loan soldier in the pack that has a bit of this residue on the bottom
So, 2 part question.
1 - will the unlucky person that opens & drinks this 1 mystery beer notice the difference in taste (will it be nasty?)
2 - how do I prevent such a buildup of the nasty mold on reused bottles in the future? Because after I found the mold, I investigated all the remaining bottles and found some more. I filled them with hot water, shook them up & washed them out again.

I filled them with hot water, shook them up & washed them out again.

Just do this within a day or two of emptying each bottle and they'll be clean enough. Add some hot water, shake it up, rinse a few more times and you're good. Get all the beer out before it can turn to mold and your life will be a lot easier. Don't use soap, just hot water. Then sanitize with Starsan or Iodophor right before bottling.

Dishwashers can't really clean bottles since the water can't always get all the way in there, some models can sanitize if they get hot enough but it's not worth the risks in my opinion (soap or rinse aid residue in a bottle can ruin a beer).

edit: heckler beat me to it!

I say man up and drink it yourself and find out! Haha definitely don't give it to a friend. It might be OK, I remember reading a thread or two where someone didn't notice the mold ring until after they drank the beer. Wait until you've had a few then pound it back :drunk:

Thanks guys, what about the taste of that rouge moldy beer?

Hi

Most of the time it will taste awful. Every once in a great while it will cure infections. It might be poison ....

There is no way to be *sure* exactly what the outcome will be. There are literally many millions of types of stuff you would look at and call mold. Give the stuff a sniff test before drinking, a lot of the stuff is smelly.

Simple act of self preservation - warn those about to drink from this batch. Mostly it will save you getting beer spit up all over you or getting beaned with the bottle....

hot water rinse them immediately after you pour yourself a beer. Then sterilize later when you're bottling.
Yep. very simple. Just make sure bottle is clean after you dirnk it with all yeast off bottom. Star san before bottling and you're good to go. Noticed a few with mold before bottling and just pitched the bottles. My brew buddy wasn'r proprly rinsing after driniking, but is now:)

Hi

Easy way:

Rinse bottles when you empty them. After rinse, fill with water from the tap. Let sit until the next morning. When sober, check, full of water = has been rinsed. If not full of water, forgot to rinse, needs a bit more cleaning.

I've been rinsing my bottles immediately after emptying them since my first brew some years ago. However, one of my daughters often brings me empty bottles that have science experiments growing inside them! So, those get the Oxyclean and bottle brush treatment BEFORE they go into my empty bottle supply. I am always amazed at the crap people put into empty beer bottles!
