I'm going to build my own fermentation cap like the one from brewers hardware, but is rather weld a ball lock gas port to it so I can also use a sounding valve. Maybe a dumb question, but are the ball lock fittings stainless? I assume that they are.
 
you can buy stainless ball valves as well as brass. stainless are usually harder to find
 
They are stainless. I think instead of welding on the Ball lock fitting, you would just need to weld on the threaded post.
 
I agree with horseinmay, you should weld a threaded post on. Without the post, there is nothing to hold the poppet in place so you'd have a permanently open port with no way to seal it up.

Other than destroying a good keg, where can I get a post? I saw some corney kegs are 9/16-18. Is that a flared fitting?
