im currently brewing a batch of kiss yer cousin kentucky common, this is the second time i brew this beer and the second time i miss my mash temp, but it only seems to happen on this recipe. it was at 149 at the start of the mash and after the 60 mins was at 141, i normally loose very little over the 60 mins mashing.

how will this affect my beer, and does any one know why this is happening

yup, always do.
even put more hot water than i usually do, and let it heat longer, since i didnt want the same problem

The temp of your grain will affect what your strike temp should be too

Is it less grain than you normally mash? Mashes with larger volume will hold temp better. Also, more headspace will allow more evaporation which will cool the mash, even though the lid is closed and the steam stays in the tun. I have started laying aluminum foil on top of the mash inside the cooler and it helps keep the temp where I want it.
