I'm brewing a lager tomorrow but the yeast that came with my kit was dead (wyeast 2007...didn't inflate after smacking the pack)...went to the lhbs and picked up the only lager yeast they had so I can get my starter started...

Well I come home, and upon further inspection see that I bought s-33 that's labeled as a lager yeast...is this a mistake? Can I ferment it like a lager or should I just do it at ale temps?

(BTW...lhbs is like an hour and a half away, so I'd prefer not to go back)

Didn't inflate or the yeast is dead? I had an Irish Ale smack pack that was eight month old once. I smacked it and let it sit. It took a month to swell.

I would make a starter out of it. Then try and step it up.

I can't speak to the S-33 but, it does seem to me that 53.6 - 77 is pretty high for a lager! :)

Northern brewer has the s-33 out of stock due to being mid-printed, I'm guessing that is what you found. I would try finding out if it was really ale yeas mis-printed as lager yeast or if it was lager yeast with the wrong label.

That's really something. I think your right about starting it as a Lager.

I wonder what Fermentis will do about it.

Please let us know, and good luck! :mug:

So I emailed fermentis, and the batch code on my packets corresponds with an ale yeast that was mislabeled as a lager yeast...thanks for all your input!

By the way...if you have s-33 packs with the following numbers on it know that you really have an ale yeast:

78526 111 1229

Did you use the S-33 or did the Wyeast 2007 start ?

Well...at least you were still able to make BEER. :mug:

A lack of swelling does not automatically mean the yeast is dead. I had a pack of British Ale II that didn't swell (I've heard others report the same thing with this strain). I pitched it to a starter and it worked great. Yesterday, I pitched my third batch (1.060, 1.060 and 1.075) onto the yeast cake from that apparently dead batch of yeast. This morning there is a very health head of krausen and it is going fine.
