I have a friend who is going to be driving back from Michigan in the next week or so and I'm hoping to get him to bring back some beers that we can't get in NJ. Beyond the obvious (Founders) - any recommendations?

I love Short's, and if you like IPAs I bet you'd love Humalupalicious. He makes a lot of other beers, too, and all are good except for the Bellaire Brown is fairly boring and run-of-the-mill.

Short's, Bell's, Perrin, Dark Horse out of Marshall, Keweenaw Brewing Company, Jolly Pumpkin, Arcadia, B. Nektar Meads, Dragonmead, New Holland Brewing are just a few to try to find.

There are over 100 breweries in Michigan, any requests based on style? Might want to direct them to some brewpubs for a growler or two while their here. Grab the Mitten Brewing Co. growler just because it's awesome. Doesn't hurt that the beer is good too.

There is a must when bringing back beer from Michigan... Bell's Brewery! I know, you can probably get that in NJ but it's SO good!!

Also, maybe they can find something from Surly Brewery that is sold in Michigan. I know that Surly probably doesn't ship to NJ. Nor do they ship to SC... :-(

Surly doesn't even distribute to all of Minnesota, and they don't distribute to Michigan at all. Getting Surly requires a trip to Minneapolis/St Paul or at least eastern MN. (And that is one of my all time favorites!)

Thanks for all the responses. I asked him where exactly he's going but he hasn't told me yet. Hope I get get some of the ones mentioned here

Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids. You should be able to find cans all around. I went to the brewery when I was out there at NHC and their stuff is fantastic.

My pick for the quintessential Michigan beer, Bells Two Hearted.

Take that and Oberon, those two would be my desert island beers.

Oddsides Citra Pale
Oddsides Simcoe Sensation
Shorts Prolonged Enjoyment
Greenbush Dunegras
Greenbush Anger

There's a bunch more, but those were the ones I drank a bunch of when I was up there a couple weeks ago. Surprised you can't get Bells and Founders in NJ.

I live in Grand Rapids, right down the street from Brewery Vivant. I would definitely pick up a pack of Vivant, maybe Farmhand or Big Red Coq (the Zaison is great too, just harder to find canned). Dark Horse also makes a great IPA, the Crooked Tree. I'd also maybe get some New Holland. In addition Right Brain and North Peak are pretty good.

And there is still so much I haven't tried. There's a lot of beer here.

Founder's of course, but I definitely second Brewery Vivant and Jolly Pumpkin. HopCat is good. Short's is kind of hit or miss - either their beer is great (see Huma Lupa Licious and Anniversary Ale) or bad (see PB and Banana Wheat or Black Licorice Lager). And Dragonmead and Greenbush both have some great offerings (Final Absolution and Under the Kilt for the former, Anger and Brother Benjamin for the latter).
