So I was just putting together a mash tun. I have a rectangular 48 qt igloo cooler. The drain hole is about 1 1/2" above the bottom of the cooler. Is that going to give me issues when draining? I've noticed in a lot of the picture of these the cooler has a recess where the drain is so the hole is at roughly the same elevation as the bottom of the cooler. Could I just prob up the other end of the cooler? Also, some suggest using a coiled wire inside of the SS braid to prevent it from crushing. Is that a big issue?

I tilt the cooler all the time. No biggie. As far as the braid, it depends on the quality. I've used mine for over two years and no crushing yet. But, others have had issues. Guess it depends on the manufacturer.

I have the same issue. So my shank (I think that's what it's called) will have to be modified so as to be able to have drain notches put in. Then I'll be able to tilt it for best drainage; otherwise, I'd lose a few litres of wort.

I use the 60 qt igloo ice cube and it has a similar problem with the drain being about 1 1/2" off the bottom.

I used a couple of elbows and nipples to get the pickup to the bottom of the cooler where I hook up the braid.

No tilting necessary & no lost wort.

Or Fly sparge.

Thanks Bull. That solves my issue perfectly. I am in the stages of setting up AG and am reading HBT continuously to learn technique but some solutions have eluded me to this point.
