Made a huge bottle opener

Had to break out my table saw yesterday to work on a project and while it was out I decided to make this bottle opener Ive had an idea about for a while now.

Just used some spruce 1x4s, a 1x10, and an old glass out of a picture frame.


Came out a little big because I had to leave room above the glass for the bottle, sometimes I have big bottles lol

very cool, although I'd be worried about a drunken mishap with glass there... A small suggestion would be to get some perspex or plexi.

nice! Looks good man. I dig the cap catcher idea, but yea, I wouldn't trust myself with glass!

For the cap catcher I could picture Plexiglas with a brass grill behind for decoration. The Plexi and grill would slid upward in dados for dumping the caps out the bottom.

I was actually planning on doing something very similar to this. My question for you is... It looks like you stained the wood, if you did, what did you use to stain it that allowed you to paint over it? I wanted to stain mine and paint my little homebrew logo over the stain, but Im a little unsure of the paints ability to stick to the stain

Paint will stick to the wood just fine.

I obviously just did a rustic design so I used spruce I had lying around. Hit it with a fruitwood stain (again because i had some). Painted it, and then hit it with a couple layers of polyurethane.

My wife actually did the painting and I think she used a paint marker. But Ive painted stained woods plenty of times with no problems.

Ahhh fair enough. Ya, Ive never painted stained wood, and I was gonna use the oil based stain I had laying around so I was worried about potentially messing it up (ill probably still test some on scrap wood). Thanks for the reply!

I think the key is making sure the stain has cured out completely... then it should be fine.

This looks cool, I have been thinking of doing something similar as SWMBO keeps finding bottle caps everywhere which is apparently my fault. I was going to use magnets for catching them though

Same reason here. I tried telling her we wouldnt have that issue if I had a multi keg/tap system which apparently is not the same thing as saying "sorry, it wont happen again"

Mine was in the LHBS a couple of weeks back and told them I was looking at kegging, they told her it was a brewing necessity and that it would stop the need to have bottles everywhere. I think she was sold.

Bottle caps finding their way into the floor our left on the counter was how I got my kegarator too!
