LME yeast starter

You can use it. The tough part is just measuring it out since it's so thick. Basically add 20% to any amount of DME you were going to use and that is how much LME you want. How you get it measured is another question. :)

Edit: Should have mentioned, the 20% rule applies by weight. I'm not sure how you'd do it by volume if that is your usual method.

I usually shoot for around 1.045 gravity on my starters. I suppose one way would be to keep dissolving LME and taking readings until you get to that point. Would be pretty tedious work I think though. :)

I know. I have no energy to try to pull off a science experiment tonight. I may just skip the starter and cross my fingers.

Some people think you need to be really precise about the amount of water and extract in your starter. They might be right but I don't know.

I usually just get it about as thick as it was when I was doing the two gallon stove top boil and call it good. I figure that should work with LME as well as it does the powder.

Hey, if you like it go for it! It's surely a better approach than mine. I'm one of those non-technical, non-organized brewers.

I do keep a notebook though.

And doing it right it seems.

You can do up all the LME into a 1040 sg solution and can the remainder to be used at a later date.
I've begun saving a bit of wort from my AG brews and canning them to be used in starters. Beats using expensive LME or DME.

I keep trying to talk myself into doing up a half batch and then canning it all into mason jars but I never get around to it. DME is cheap enough and you use so little in a starter that I don't mind keeping it around for that. On the other hand I'm probably just being lazy and could save a fortune. :)
