I've got a BIAB going right now and I'm recirculating for the first time. With the bag still in the kettle and after 25 min of recirculating @158, I tested the wort's gravity. The target is 1.074 but the reading is only at 1.051. Will this number increase when I pull and drain the bag or will should I simply let the recirculation continue for the full 60 min as we are not done extracting sugar (I was hoping the recirculation would cut down on time)?

Thanks

Did you cool the gravity sample?

Is 1.074 the post boil gravity?

Pulling the bag will not increase gravity unless you have major channeling goin on.

Assuming you're still mashing, that will go way up after the boil, because water, but not sugar, will evaporate.

Cool the sample unless you're using a refract omelet with temp correction.

Account for the absorption of water due to grain.

I believe Tasteybre brew and beer smith have calculators to tell you if you're on point for pre boil gravity.

Thanks for all the help. No the sample was hot, we sent it to the fridge, but a calculator only made a 1 degree correction. We Gravity did raise, for some reason it didn't occur to me that the boiling would raise the OG. Duhh. too much going on.

The estimated preboil gravity was 1.065... and the last sample we took before pulling the bag was 1.061. So we were on track..

Thanks again everyone!

Good news! After adjusting the beersmith file, the OG of 1.070 spot on! We cooled the sample and got about 6 more points and the boil finished out nicely on point with volume and gravity. Happy day!

Glad to hear it worked out, I'm going to assume you mean OG :mug:
