I hear everyone talking about their LHBS as if they are plentiful as Walmarts... well you guys should consider yourselves lucky. My "LHBS" is an hour away from me, and their prices are far from competitive to boot. For example, today I brewed, and dicovered I was going to need an extra pound of Carafa II. So to drive to get it would cost me about 30 dollars for a pound of grain. My Darth Vader black IPA just became a Lando Calrissian brown lol. Funny thing is, I am in the heart of northern california wine country. Give it up for your LHBS you ungrateful ***tards :mug:

30 bucks that is insane my LHBS is a brewery and I just went yesterday to get some grain and hops for a 2.5 gallon batch and it cost me like 6-7 bucks for everything. I am sorry to hear that your LHBS sucks.

Well of course they can't get away with selling the grain that steep (although it is almost 2 dollars a pound for 2row and about 50-75 cents more for specialties) but after I factor in the half tank of gas ill be using, yes. 30 bucks gone. I need a grain mill bad, 50 lb sacks are sounding SO good

I consider myself very lucky to have a good LHBS about a mile and a half from my house. It is well stocked and prices are reasonable.

A couple of weeks ago I was part way into my boil when I realized I forgot something. Had my wife watch the post and I ran up there to get what I needed. Brew day saved.

I definitely make it a point to but most of my stuff there. I want to make sure ihe is around and sells enough stuff so it is always fresh.

I'm luck only because mine is near work. If I'm not working though, it's 15 miles through some of the worst sections of NYC traffic and $5 toll away from me. I make sure to stock up on everything any time I stop there.

I'm aware of the brooklyn homebrew and the brooklyn kitchen. Are you near a different LHBS?

Only one in LV and it's about 30 min from me. Prices are not too bad so I like to use them if I can. But the only convenient time for me to stop by there is if something else has me on that side of town. Needless to say I always double and triple check my list when I plan a brewday.

used to have one about 20 minutes from the house. 2 seconds from work. its been closed for maybe 3 years :( now the closest ones are both 2 hours away. i haven't been to either of them yet, and probably won't. i just order online.

My closest LHBS is a 3-4 hour drive away....

I'm pretty much all mail order, except for liquid yeast in the summer. That doesn't fare to well sitting in a UPS/Fed-Ex hub in Phoenix in 110+*F for a few days.

I do realize how lucky I am...my LHBS is actually like a Sam's Club of brewing. It's the warehouse for an online shop (www.ebrew.com)‚ AND it's about 5 min drive/about a mile as the crow flies!
As was previously mentioned, I also have had brew day saved by proximity....

Pretty lucky here in central Maryland. One is 15 minutes away (and not far from my mom's house and my favorite liquor store, so I'm frequently there anyway). The other is maybe 30 minutes away. They each have slightly different strengths, so I frequent them both.

Those are the only two I know. I've never used Brooklyn kitchen. I heard they mostly cater to the kit crowd.

They run out of some grains and yeasts and hops at times but they're good for all-gain brewing as long as you call ahead our can substitute in a pinch. The place has people who are passionate and who do help, etc and I don't see then pushing anything in particular. Their equipment selection is thin, they're not kit-oriented, though (not many diy parts like weldless bulkheads though). They may have been in the past, I have to check out the brooklyn homebrew to better compare the two sunce I hear great things about it.

there are 3 lhbs within 30 min of me but the only good one is only open on wed. and sat. and they only accept cash. but at least they are well stocked and have decent base malt prices.

My LHBS is one one of the smaller more beer show rooms. Not perfect, but after visiting one of the multiple other shops within a 15 mile radius I realized I'm lucky for what B3 does offer.

Next week I have to head over to Santa Cruz to the organic shop. I've never been there, but from their website I'm not expecting to be pleased :(

I do consider myself lucky, my local shop is northern brewer and when im feelin crazy I will make the twenty minute drive to midwest supplies :)

45 minute drive, wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't all I-95 traffic. Started doing most of my ordering from Brewmasters and Austin unless I know I'll drive passed it going to swmbo moms.

My LHBS closed. But I order most of my things from AHBS and it gets here the day after it shipped.

My LHBS is about 20 miles/20 minutes and they are very reasonable. Im glad to have them as I used mail order once and well ..... it was mail order. Kind of like the check is in the mail.

Bite me....In metro Detroit they are MORE plentiful than wal-marts.

:D

my LHBS also happens to be my local brewery (Ithaca Beer), so I can stop by for a tasting and pick up some supplies at the same time :D

Count yourselves lucky, my LHBS is almost 7,000 miles away in Cali. If Morebeer didn't ship to APO addresses I wouldn't be brewing at all.

I really feel for ya. bet you have to order dry yeast B/c of the long transport time.

Imagine my glee when I discovered I could make it to AHS and back on my lunch break with time to spare. Lucky indeed.
