I recently bought a scale from a local grocery store. Ended up working horrible after the first few uses. I returned that and bought the anvil small scale. If it works well I might buy the big grain scale. But untill then I will scale out a few pounds at a time.

What are you guys using? Maybe I made a terrible purchase.

Also I still need a grain mill so I will have my grain pre mill at the store. Do you guys mix or shake up grain bags so all of the fine mill so it dosen't settle out? I think i have noticed efficiency numbers not adding up.

I use an Escali scale. For grains, I just measure out 4 pounds at a time.

I also use an Escali scale, one of the flat glass models. It can weigh up to 7 kg (15 pounds) for grain, down to 1 gram, precise enough for hops. I put an inverted plastic take-out or Glad container under the weighing bucket, so I can read the scale.
Here's mine, except it's way, way overpriced at almost double of the ~$20 I paid for mine at Groupon, 7 years ago. :tank:

The feeling of knowing you got a good deal though hah.

Have you had any issues with it? Price is really reasonable looks very similar to the large anvil one.
I've been using the small Anvil scale for several years for both grain and hops. Works great for me.

Good to know. I ended up buying one In a hurry. My wife was on my case to put the Amazon order in.

I use one of these for grain and usually hops:

0.1oz resolution. Goes up to 11lb including your tare'd bowl or whatever, so just for some margin I usually won't do more than about 8lbs at a time, but that pretty much fills up my large plastic bowl anyway.

For water additions or very small hop quantities (I've done one recipe that calls for .25oz of hops at a time) I use an RCBS reloading scale similar to this one (looks like my exact one has since been discontinued):

Resolution is .1 grains, or .01 grams, and accuracy for its intended users is safety-critical, so it is definitely accurate. Not sure if there is a more cost effective alternative that is acceptable for homebrewing, but I already had it.

I bought the Rhino coffee gear bench scale for ḿy small scale brewing. For such an affordable scale it seems to be reliable. Although the range is 2-2000g (ounce mode incl.) it consistently measures the small quantities starting from ~2 grams and can be re-calibrated. For example, 7 grams of hops or a pencil weighing 7.0 grams always gives 7.0-7.1 grams on this small scale (even if the items are placed near the edge of the scale) whereas my previous kitchen scale from the grocery store was totally useless for measuring the small quantities. Even though it worked well for major grain additions and the theoretical precision was 0,1 g. 7 g on that scale could have been anything between 1-15 grams.
