Making a hard raspberry lemonade and want to add a hint of basil flavor. Best way to do that? When to add?

Lets say, 4 cups of sugar, 3 cups of water, bring to a boil so all syrup is dissolved, then add a bunch of basil and turn off the heat. Let that steep for 30 mins or so as it cools, take out basil. You now have about a qt or so of basil simple syrup. Sweeten your drink to your tastes with this.
You can do this with anything very easily, ginger, lemongrass, mint, cardamon, cloves, etc.
