Hello All,

First time post.

I've been reading articles about the late addition of extract during a boil, and am contemplating doing so during my next boil. I'm actually quite excited -- every single brew I've done for the last 6 months has been FAR too dark in color.

In any case, I generally add my wort chiller to the boil during the last 15 minutes in order to sterilize it. My plan is to add the LME at the 10 minute mark... but I am concerned about (1) not being able to effectively stir the LME to prevent scorching, and (2) the LME getting all over the wort chiller (both inside and above the boiling wort)

Has anybody had experience adding LME with a wort chiller in the boil? Any suggestions for doing so (or alternatives to my plan)?

Thanks in advance!!

I would think that 15 min is overkill, time-wise, on sterilizing the wort chiller. Add the extract at the 10 min mark, stir to dissolve and then add the wort chiller -5 minutes should be more than sufficient. Restaurants only use a minute or two at 180 degrees to sanitize their dishware.

I gave up adding the wort chiller to the boil as it cooled everything down and stopped the boil for ten minutes or so. Either sterilize it in a separate pot of boiling water or spray it with Star San.

Brewham - excellent idea. Way to "think outside the brew pot"!! As a nOOb I try to follow instructions exactly. That's why I love this forum.

Thanks for the reples...

Re: StarSan... I've got a different sanitizer for my kegging system (AAA maybe?)

It's the plant-friendly stuff. Will that do the trick as well, or does copper need the more hardcore cleaner?

If it will work, how long should I soak the chiller for? (I've got an old stock pot I can use)
