I have brewed 2 batches now using the extract kits from a local brew shop and they have came out amazing, I want to try a black lager next but have heard that when it ferments it needs to be at a controlled colder temp. Any advice I should know before trying a lager?

Also I am switching to partial mash as well
 
Check out How to Brew by Palmer online (it's free!).
My first lager was undrinkable shortly after primary and matured into deliciousness after 3 weeks at 34F
 
Make sure to read How to Brew ass joeybeer mentioned. Re-read it until you fully understand the process and almost feel like you have already brewed it.


I just did my first lager a few months ago so here are the things I would have done differently.

1) Make a BIG starter and make sure to calculate how much you need. Use the pitching calculator on MrMalty.com. Typically you need almost a gallon starter and 2-4 liquid yeast packs depending on their age.

2) Make sure you can control your temps very accurately.

3) Make sure to aerate very well. You should shake the container for 5 minutes rest and do it for another 5 minutes. Set a timer because when you are shaking 5 gallons of wort for 5 minutes, it seems like forever.

4) Be patient. The primary fermentation seems like it takes forever. The lagering period is like a slow torture waiting to see how it comes out.

Good luck! I love the cleaner taste from a lager and I will be doing a second one again shortly!
 
Other excellent resources are Noonan's New Brewing Lager Beer, braukaiser.com, and innumerable threads here on HBT. Lagers aren't much different, they just require a lot more yeast cells, refrigeration, TLC, and above all patience.
