I racked my brew to a secondary glass carboy at 5 days. My fermentation seemed to stop after 2-3 days. I am not sure whether i racked it too soon or not. I read that racking to a secondary can be done "anytime when the primary is more or less done" I do have quite a thick (2" or so) layer of sediment on the bottm of the secondary. This was not really my concern. i figured that was because i did rack it alittle early.
My concern, or should i say curiosity is why i have a kraeusen on the top still. It's not thick, but there definitely is a bit of one. I thought that as the fermentation winds down, the kraeusen settles back into the beer and the beer clarifies during conditioning..... ?? The beer is nice and clear, it's just that the top has not cleared.
This is my first batch, so i am just curious whether or not this is a normal occurance, or was there something that could have been done better or differently.

Thanks

How long have you had it in the secondary? The last batch I did I transfered a little early and had a kraeusen form in secondary but it cleared up after about a week and a half.

Not to worry...

Did you take any hydrometer readings?...normally most people (for ales) rack into the secondary after 1 week. Most, if not all the fermetentation is done at this point. You really dont need a hydometer but will help if you need to see where the fermentation is at...3 days of constant readings usually means that the beer has fermented fully.
Krausen may be present in your beer if it was not quite fermented and that the racking stirred up the the yeast thereby prompting more fermentation of used sugars.
The krausen will drop after a few days....and then in a few weeks you can enjoy your great beer!

PS: Welcome aboard !

Cheers.

Today is the 10th day that it is in the secondary. So, maybe it will clear within the next few days. I planned on leaving it in the secondary until next weekend which will make it about 16 or 17 days.
I did take a hydrometer reading before racking it and it was right where it was supposed to be. I didn't take readings for 3 days. I figured that if it was at the reading the recipe called for, then everything was good to go. I suppose it may have dropped alittle more since then. I am getting anxious to bottle. One more week, and then it's on to the final stage. I think i am going to start another batch real soon!

Thanks
