hey guys, so my equipment kit came in, and my first brew is gonna be a belgian dubel and the ingredient kit came with a liquid belgian yeast. Now I know that I should probably use a blow off for this and not the airlock because not doing so may cause a mess. Here's my question, the lid on my fermenting bucket only has a small hole only big enough to fit a tiny stopper just a tad bigger than the size of the insertion tip of the airlock. How do make a blow off setup for this? do I just get a tiny tube that will fit in that stopper?

thanks

What sort of airlock do you have? 3 piece, or S type. If you have a 3 piece, you can add some 1/2" ID tubing over the center. If you have the S type, I don't know how you could do it.

-a.

two options really, use smaller tubing don't know how effective that would be.

2) get another lid and drill a hole in it to take larger tubing.

does the lid have a rubber grommet?
if so, you can pull that out and stick the blow-off tube directly into the lid.

ok, its a 3 pc. airlock...so what you're saying is to attach a tube to the piece in the center of the airlock?

getting another lid might be the only way if attaching a tube directly to the airlock doesn't sound good enough. what do you guys think?

as for the lid, there's nothing on attached to the hole. I measured the hole and its 1 and 7/10cm

also I reccomend you cut the tip of the airlock off. By this I mean most 3 pieces come with some sort of tappered end (the end that is inside of the lid). This can cause a clog resulting in a protectile lid, airlock or all of the above. Cut it off just above where the tip is tapered or partially covered.

i see what you're saying...ok, ill cut that off. thanks for the heads up!

Haha glad to help!

Just so I don't lead you into erroneously hacking apart your airlock, I mean the very bottom tip in this picture

take your bottling wand hose or other suitable one, put a small slit in it...Heat it for a few minutes in hot water to soften, then do this.

One thing that I do to all my airlocks is saw or break off the little criss/cross of plastic on the bottom of them.

so you think the little tube that's used for siphoning is adequate enough for this?

Well, since I posted it, and have been posting it when people ask about it for years, you would think that that would be the case, right? ;)

(I'm the guy that first introduced the idea of the airlock blowoff tube on here.) :D

It doesn't matter whether it is belgian yeast, or american yeast or chinese yeast, a blow off, is a blow off is a blow off.....If you need to use one, it works.....

nice, revvy! never thought of that. going to convert 1 airlock/tube combo to this before my next brew :mug:

been there; not too long ago was there with a stopped up airlock, lid laying on the floor 7 feet away, ipa krausened up really good, and had to be at work shortly. put the lid back on, replaced the airlock with a fresh 1, and sweated the whole day hoping it didn't happen again. learned a long time ago to put the fresh fermenter in a tote as soon as i pitched, so if it overflowed, it stayed in the tote... this should stop that from happening again
