The man was a god in my opinion. From the Epic Spartacus and one of the most crushing closing scenes in cinema, to his "Paths of Glory," comparatively unknown, with its cutting pathos against the backdrop of WWI and the insanity of rear-office brass commanding the suicide of 1000's, pointlessly (and making examples of soldiers by executing them unjustly for cowardice). The final scene, in which a young German woman is made to sing before a drunken mob of French soldiers, is wrenching. She's rightly terrified, and wounded, and by the end of the scene, so are they all.
An incredibly moving pic by Kubrick, and masterful performance by Douglas.
RIP. A long rich life.
