My measurements from my recent brew day do not make mathematical sense, unless i am totally missing something.

Pre-boil volume was 1.049, measured with both hydrometer and refractometer at room temp. I had 7 gallons at 170 degrees (or 6.7 gal using 96% shrinkage calc)

Post-boil volume was 1.056, measured with both instruments at room temp. I had 5.4 gallons at 70 degrees.

The problem is that the concentration of the gravity readings do not make sense given the change in volume! I confirmed with the brewers friend / beersmith calculator that it is not even close. Assuming that i got one of the measurements correct (lets say the 5.4 gal ending) my original volume would have had to be 6.2 gallons. This is way off from the 6.7 adjusted total, and there is no way i could miss it.

I also went back and remeasured my pot tonight at 1,2,4,8 gallons and the gallon / inch I used is fine (0.69 gal / inch at 60 deg F). Even if it was off, it would effect both the pre and post boil measurements so should not throw the calc off much anyways.

One weird thing i did notice is that if i measured the gal / inch based on the measurements of the pot (14D x 12H) it would be 0.66 gal / inch) If i plugged that into my measurements the concentration of sugars still don't make sense based on computed volumes.

Does anyone have any ideas?
