I'm in the process of making a keggle. Does the spigot have to be stainless steel?

I don't think it HAS to be stainless steel, but your keggle would only be as strong as it's weakest link.

I went all stainless for mine, and it wasn't expensive!

Be mindful of temps. Most material won't handle temps as high as we work with. Also be mindful of chemical resistance and ease of cleaning. For these reasons, I would not use anything other than stainless.

IMHO stainless is the only way to go. Might be a little more $ upfront but you won't regret it. I would also recommend that you spend the extra $ and go with 3-piece ball valve...with a 2-piece you have to remove the entire valve from the keggle to do a complete cleaning!

I hate being the devil's advocate so to speak - but I would say you'll have plenty of other opportunities to spend your money and I would stick with 2 piece. IMHO - there's really no reason to remove them on any routine basis as long as you can circulate some PBW or other cleaner.

Good point. I'm just one of those brewers who probably "over-cleans" all my equipment! :D

I don't mean to imply I'm not :) But I think a good recirc will take care of it. PBW and caustic are pretty effective if you give them the chance to be. That said - every once in a while I'd still disassemble and soak too.
