Hi there,

I'd like to minimize my O2 pickup when kegging from a SS Brewtech Conical. Thinking about employing the following scheme:

1. Purge the sanitized keg with Co2 through the OUT post while having a Spunding valve set on the IN post with a setting of 2 PSI.

2. Purge head space in the Conical.

3. Start pressurized transfer from the Conical, into the OUT post of the keg, with a pressure of 3 - 4 PSI.

4. When the keg is filled, purge the head space 15 times.

Do I miss something?

Also, when purging the empty keg, how many times would you do it and what pressure, taking in mind the connected Spunding valve? Would I be better of using the build in relief valve and connecting the Spunding valve afterwards?

Process looks great to me. I doing to to those lengths and my beer comes out great so I'm sure you have it covered.

I just purge the keg for a few seconds, two times, then run the line in from my SS conical. I figure there is already a blanket of CO2 on the wort due to fermentation, which will stay below the oxygen that comes in while transferring, and that the amount of CO2 I put in the keg will simply rise and push out the oxygen from the keg as I transfer. Never had any oxidation problems that I've detected.

There is no such thing as "blanket of CO2" - this has been debunked numerous times. Similarly, CO2 will not "simply rise and push out the oxygen".

to OP - fill the keg with starsan, to the rim, push it out with CO2. This way you end up with a keg that is purged.

When transferring to the keg, make sure your "exhaust" tube from air QD is going into water or starsan solution.

Well sum batch....even a broken clock is right twice a day. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=431015 I've been going commando this whole time I guess.

Still, seems like an exhaustive process unless you're having problems with oxydation. Do you do that every time you keg 2x4?

Yes, with "just purge the keg for a few seconds, two times" approach and your "I figure there is already a blanket of CO2" bogus theory, you are actually oxidizing your beer substantially on *both* ends during transfer. If you researched anything for a minute you would realize you are pretty much maximizing oxygen pickup during transfer.
But given your past history of personal attacks and ignoramus attitude, you will just keep doing what you are doing, insisting this is the best way. Sure. That's fine - it's not like anyone can convince you there is a better way, or that you may be wrong. Whatever.

But please, don't give "expert" advice to others, especially to someone who is genuinely asking how to "minimize O2 pickup" (and OP's process is already order of magnitude better than yours). Unless you are a just messing with them, which would be cruel.

One thing you didn't see up top there was advice. Certainly not claiming that my keg filling method is the best - in fact I posted a thread supporting your post, even though I think you're a d-bag. I am more than willing to change my method, and I think I will, even though it seems like a lot of CO2 and starsan. I'll also come right back here and post it up if I notice an improvement.

You'll never see me claiming to be an expert. I just spout sh!t on the internet. That is what it's for.

Good day.
