Planning a small remodel that will include a under the counter/built in kegerator. First question is when did these things get so expensive? I've heard the cheap ones don't have a compressor. I'd like to avoid that. What should I insist upon feature wise when buying one of this units? I'd like to get it done for 1k if possible.

get a mini fridge off Craig's list and mod it into your counter. The fridge will cost you under $100. a false cabinet panel that you can remove can hide it away and yet give you access. A little insulation and PVC to connect the line(s) to the taps and a computer fan to blow cold air up the taps to keep the lines cold. With your budget you can get really nice taps and aesthetics
